About Herpes
Genital herpes is an STI caused by two types of viruses – herpes simplex virus type
1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Herpes is usually transmitted by
contact with sores or bodily fluids (saliva or genital fluids) of someone with herpes.
Transmission still possible even without an active outbreak.
Symptoms:
Most people with herpes experience no symptoms or have mild symptoms that could be mistaken for other conditions like ingrown hairs and pimples. If you do manifest symptoms they may appear as:
- Sores around mouth, genitals, or anal area.
- Flu like symptoms: fever, body aches, or swollen lymph nodes.
- Itching or discomfort in affected genital areas.
- Painful urination.
- Fever.
- Discharge from vagina or penis.
If symptoms manifest, they usually show up 2-12 days after exposure.
